The Journey

Why We’re Here

Why We’re Here

Rusted Roots wasn’t built in a day—it was built by hand, with a whole lot of heart, muddy boots, and a deep pull toward something quieter.

Rusted Roots wasn’t built in a day—it was built by hand, with a whole lot of heart, muddy boots, and a deep pull toward something quieter.

When we first found this patch of land tucked into the Canadian Shield, just outside Sharbot Lake, it felt like the forest had been waiting for us. Five acres of mixed woods, winding deer trails, and a spring-fed pond that sings with loons and red-winged blackbirds. We knew right away—we wanted to build something here. Something simple. Something real.

We call it the Grove now. And it’s more than a place to stay—it’s a place to come back to yourself.

We’ve cleared trails, hauled firewood, watched the seasons shift through the trees. Bit by bit, we’ve carved out spaces for guests to unplug and breathe deeper. Whether you're exploring the K&P Trail by bike, snowshoeing after a fresh snowfall, paddling a nearby lake, or just sitting still by the fire—this land has a way of grounding you.

And while the full-service village of Sharbot Lake is just minutes away, once you're here, it feels like the world gets quieter. Kingston is only an hour down the road, Ottawa about ninety minutes—but here, time stretches out.

This place reminded us what matters. We hope it does the same for you.

Mission

At Rusted Roots, our mission is to offer a quiet, hand-built escape into the heart of nature—where folks can breathe deeper, wander freely, and reconnect with what matters most.

We welcome nature lovers, stargazers, couples, families, and anyone craving a slower pace, into a space where rustic charm meets honest comfort.

Through thoughtful cabin and camp sites, forest trails, and moments shared by the fire, we aim to create experiences that linger longer than your stay.

Vision

We see in the Grove becoming a well-loved stop on the map for anyone looking to swap the noise for birdsong, and busy days for barefoot ones.

A place where reclaimed wood holds stories. Where every guest finds room to rest, roam, and return to themselves. Where the land is honoured, and the pace is just right.

Our vision is to grow with the seasons, offering new ways for guests to explore, create, and connect—while keeping the magic rooted in simplicity.

Our Philosophy

We believe in the kind of travel that leaves the land better than we found it.

That’s why we build with reclaimed and natural materials, tread lightly, and keep the wild things wild. Sustainability isn’t a buzzword for us—it’s just how we live.

We’re grounded in good old-fashioned hospitality—welcoming each guest like an old friend. And we’re proud to support local makers, growers, and craftspeople who add richness to this corner of the Canadian Shield we call home.

Whether you’re here to write or paint, roam or stay still, roast marshmallows or just rest, we hope your time with us brings you back to yourself.

Why We’re Here

Meet Joseph

Builder of bunkies. Wrangler of wheelbarrows. Keeper of the campfire.

Joe’s the kind of guy who’d rather show you how to build a cabin than talk about himself—but if you’ve ever sat by a fire he built, walked a trail he cleared, or dined at one of his hand-built reclaimed wood tables, you already know a bit of his story.

Joe’s the kind of guy who’d rather show you how to build a cabin than talk about himself—but if you’ve ever sat by a fire he built, walked a trail he cleared, or dined at one of his hand-built reclaimed wood tables, you already know a bit of his story.

He’s a craftsman through and through—the kind who finds beauty in the bent grain of a board and purpose in every nail. He’s spent his life working with his hands, building from scratch, hauling what needed hauling, and fixing what most would leave behind. Every corner of this quiet little grove carries his mark—from the axe-split kindling stacked neatly at your cabin door to the thoughtful way the bunkies catch the morning light.

More than that, Joe believes in what this place is all about: moving slower, listening closer, and letting the land do its quiet work on your heart.

Most days you’ll find him checking the trails, tinkering in the workshop, or heading down to the water with a rod in hand, chasing the kind of stillness only fishing brings. If you see him around, don’t be shy. He’s got stories to share—and probably a spare marshmallow stick with your name on it.
